Impress your friends with this Izmir kofte recipe! Not only is it delicious, it's actually very easy to make! I did make modifications to this recipe to make it easier. I usually reserve this type of recipe for the weekends, because it can be more time consuming than the other recipes on my site, but it is well worth the effort! 

The name of this Izmir Kofte dish comes from the city it is from in Turkey. If you have never heard of kofte, they are like mini hamburger patties on top of sliced potatoes or french fries drizzled with tomato sauce. This dish is a true winner even with friends that may be hesitant to try international foods. If you love hamburgers and potatoes, then you will love this dish!

You will need the following for this Izmir Kofte recipe:

Kofte (Hamburger Patty)

  • 1 lb. Ground Beef
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/4 Plain Bread Crumbs
  • 1 T. Sumac
  • 1 1/2 t. Salt
  • 1 T. Red Pepper Flakes or powdered form
  • 1 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1 T. Cumin
  • 1/4 C. Chopped Parsley


3 Large Potatoes, washed,peeled, and sliced or 1 bag of frozen french fries


1 15 oz. Can of Diced Tomatoes OR

3-4 tomatoes (not peeled or seeded). If you are using the fresh tomatoes, you will need to also add 2 T. Red Hot Pepper Paste, 2 T. Tomato Paste and 2 T. Butter, and 1/4 cup water


  • 1/2 C. (or more) Flour
  • 3 T. Vegetable Oil (for frying)


To prepare this dish, start by pre-heating the oven to 400 degrees F. and by mixing all the ingredients under "Kofte" in a large bowl. Shape them into either round or oval shape. Put to the side.

Then, wash, peel, and slice the potatoes. You can skip this step if you want to speed up the cooking process by using frozen french fries instead. For this recipe, I chose to use frozen french fries. If this is what you opted for, then open up the bag of frozen french fries and place it in the casserole dish, then set aside.

In a skillet, heat up the vegetable oil. You are not deep frying so you need just enough oil to pan fry. Open the can of tomatoes or slice up the fresh tomatoes and put to the side. 

Add the flour on a plate. Grab each kofte, dip in the flour (both sides), and place in the hot pan. Cook 3 minutes per side or until brown. Place on a plate with paper towels to soak up the extra oil. Repeat until all the kofte is cooked. Add more oil to the pan.

Add the cut potatoes and cook 5 minutes per side. Repeat until all the potatoes are cooked.Place on a plate with paper towels to soak up the extra oil. Again, skip this step if you are using french fries.

Place potatoes or french fries in the casserole dish.  On top of each potato or french fries, add the browned kofte and tomatoes (either canned or raw uncooked tomatoessans the pastes).

If you are using fresh tomatoes instead of the canned, you will need to heat up the red hot pepper paste, tomato paste and butter in a sauce pan. Once heated, pour onto of the kofte, potatoes and tomatoes in the casserole dish.

Place in the 400 degree F oven. Cook for about 20-25 minutes.


Serve hot as-is.  You can also serve this dish with a healthy side salad.
